Though universities may not be installing scented ventilation systems in their locker rooms like the Dallas Mavericks to help players recover after a long game, they are improving their sports facilities considerably to better meet the needs of college athletes. In fact, according to the Street & Smith Sports Business Journal, universities spent $495 million on new or renovated football venues in 2012 alone.
Why? The integration of training and technology today is allowing coaches to collect specific statistics on their athletes’ nutrition and endurance benchmarks to create more personalized programs that promote holistic wellbeing and boost peak performance. Not only is effective design in sports venues pivotal to player success, but it is also a major factor in recruiting new talent to join the team.
At Oregon State University, Gensler Sports is working closely with the athletics department to upgrade student-athletes’ resources and player spaces. Ryan Sickman, Gensler’s sports practice area leader, speaks with Scott Barnes, Vice President & Athletics Director at Oregon State University, to talk about how advanced technology is helping Oregon State increase recruitment while designing optimized, individualized training programs and player safety strategies for student-athletes.
